Permeability kit for below water table measurements

Measurement of permeability is an essential determination for:

• Maximising the effectiveness irrigation
• Optimising drainage layout
• Maintaining and improving soil structure

Soil permeability is an indication of the ease, or otherwise, with which water moves through the soil. It is determined by the arrangement of soil structural components and is adversly affected by such factors as salt and clay accumulation in soil horizons.

The determination of infiltration rate gives vital information for:

• Cost-effective irrigation and drainage
• Maximising water availability to plants
• Improving crop yields
• Minimising soil erosion

The rate of infiltration of water into the soil gives an indication of the rate at which irrigation water should be applied to the soil to prevent surface run-off and drainage loss once saturation point has been reached. Infiltration data, along with other parameters such as permiability and hydraulic conductivity, is also used in determining the optimum depth and spacing of field drains. In areas of high rainfall and unfavourable relief, infiltration rate data is important in predictions relating to soil erosion potential.
